Hasnat Alam

Mr. Hasnat Alam is a young researcher and trained economist, having years of experience at multiple think tanks on various research areas. He is currently working as an Economist in Policy Research Institute (PRI), a premier think tank which drafted the 6th, 7th and 8th Five Year Plan of Bangladesh, the Delta Plan 2100 and Perspective Plan 2041. Mr. Alam’s primary research interest lies in Private Sector-led Development, Trade Facilitation through Logistics and Infrastructure and Green Growth, and has worked on several IFC and World Bank funded studies on Climate Change, Green Infrastructure and Sustainable Financing and Sectoral growth. His most recent involvement was in a World Bank funded project on Climate-informed Infrastructure Governance & Implementation of the Delta Plan 2100, where he worked as a Climate Change and Water Sector Economist.

Mr. Alam has worked as a consultant in a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation- funded study on inclusive development of Digital Financial Services (DFS) where he facilitated multiple high-level internal meetings of an enabler experts’ group, besides conducting independent research on various DFS issues and regulatory bottlenecks with an intention to derive specific recommendations based on international experience. He also served as a Project Manager in an IGC funded Expert Policy Center on Domestic Revenue Mobilization, which involved multiple strands of research and dissemination activities.

On Trade Facilitation, Mr. Alam worked as a Co-principal investigator in a research funded by the US Department of Agriculture, on IT infrastructure and trade facilitation readiness of various counterpart agencies such as BSTI, PWQ and BAEC to identify gaps and entry points for increased trade. He was also a consultant in an IFC funded study to understand the impact of various trade facilitation measures taken by the GoB and derive lessons.

Mr. Alam completed his bachelor’s from University of Nottingham and his master’s from Universitiet Hasselt-KU Leuven—obtaining a distinction in International Economics and Finance.
